Goodbye Fixator Number 3!

Daniel had his fixator removed on the 10th of September.  It was a surgery we were all looking forward to!

Since it was an "easy" surgery, I took the opportunity to take Daniel back to the OR, a job usually gallantly delegated to Shane.  It was an experience!  It felt like I was in a Glee version of Grey's Anatomy.  Candice (patient liaison) had "Celebrate" playing on her iPhone while Kenny and Servando, Dr Paley's assistants were dancing.  All Dr Paley's staff were excited to be saying goodbye to Daniel's fixator too.  It had been so tricky and on for so long!  The week before, the staff presented Daniel with a Skylander cake to celebrate too.  Even though it had been a tough journey, we felt so grateful and blessed to be part of this community of patients, families and Dr Paley's team.

The removal went really well and Dr Paley was able to insert a rod into his femur which will reduce the risk of fracture.  Daniel has to stay off his leg for 4 weeks until the holes where the fixator was have closed up.  No pin site cleaning and no physical therapy for a month!  What will we do with all that spare time? Daniel got to take his fixator home.  We were all shocked how heavy it was. I don't know how he carried all that metal around or managed to swim in the pool.

Here is a video of Daniel reading a story he wrote about having his fixator removed.  So proud of our super hero!
